The series L.I.M.B. (live in my bag) are prints of coveted objects that are carried daily, layered with botanical forms. I am drawn to understanding how an object’s importance is shaped by marketing and branding.  This affects what we take with us everyday and allows these commonly recognized objects to become cultural symbols.  I find that these objects end up holding more value than the physical material they are worth. Yet once a new color comes out, that once desired lip gloss is just plastic parts.

With this in mind, I work with objects that are distinguishable even as a two-dimensional silhouette.  I cut mylar into silhouettes of objects such as sunglasses, hair dryers, lipsticks and bobby pins to make layered piles of overlapping and intersecting ranges of color.  These personal items look as if they are falling, dancing and swirling in the open paper space.  Relief prints of botanical forms carved from linoleum are added on top.  The transparent, grey plant contrasts with the colorful fetish objects.  I decided to add this counter image because they represent a different type of symbol.  A flower and makeup are both understood as a feminine trademark and are distinctly different objects.  The plant forms are illustrative, curvilinear and delicate, which contrast strongly with the geometric, flat symbols.  The monotype and relief tools I create act as versatile matrices.  I play with color and composition by rearranging these objects, which conceal certain symbols while revealing others.

People interact with these objects on a constant basis.   The L.I.M.B. series creates an opportunity to reexamine these items that float around our lives.
